Activities/Thematic Focus

  • Developing and implementing strategies for conservation-based species, habitat and landscape monitoring at national level, in an international context and in cooperation with the individual German states (Länder)
  • Compiling data from monitoring programmes operated by the Länder and conservation organisations; developing an organisational structure and establishing a long-term animal species monitoring system in Germany, including a nationwide bird monitoring system in cooperation with the Association of German Avifaunists (DDA)
  • Developing strategies for monitoring natural habitats and species covered by the EU Habitats Directive and for meeting reporting obligations under the Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive, in close cooperation with the Länder and other EU member states
  • Developing and implementing strategies for monitoring the effects of genetically monitored organisms (GMOs) on biodiversity and ecosystems, in cooperation with the Länder and at EU level
  • Assistance in enforcement activities under the German Genetic Engineering Act (GenTG): Assessing and formulating opinions on monitoring plans submitted in applications for permission to release GMOs and place them on the market
  • Developing nationwide nature conservation indicators, including biodiversity indicators as part of the national sustainability strategy and national biodiversity strategy; alignment with Länder indicators and international indicator systems
