• General and fundamental issues relating to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
• Analysis and ongoing development of the CBD (focusing on its ecosystems approach, access to genetic resources and fair distribution of benefits, and biodiversity and climate change)
• Representing BfN at national and international level in CBD bodies and other bodies connected with the CBD
• Formulating approaches and recommendations for the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity
• Specialist scientific support for the German Federal Environment Ministry in implementing the CBD
• Cooperation with German and foreign biodiversity experts
• Organising biodiversity congresses for national and international experts
• Supporting biodiversity-related research
• Publishing research reports and conference proceedings
