Genetically Modified Organisms

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genetic material has been altered (using molecular biological methods) in a way that does not occur naturally by cross-breeding or natural recombination (GenTG, Directive 2001/18/EC). Genetic engineering uses a variety of methods to introduce foreign DNA into an organism in order to produce a GMO with new traits. GMOs are also known as transgenic organisms.
