Mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at low tide
NATURA 2000 Code: 1140
Definition:
Sandflats, mudflats or flats of mixed substrate not covered by sea water at low tide. Vascular plants are largely absent. In areas that rarely emerge open eelgrass communities may be present. The sandflats and mudflats are habitats for juvenile marine fish species. They are also of particular importance as feeding grounds for wildfowl and waders, and especially for migratory species as moulting, roosting and overwintering sites. At the Baltic coast (minor tidal influence) the 'wind wadden' sites (where sediments are exposed by action of wind) are included.
Notes on habitat mapping:
The delimitation of this habitat type is to be based on the regularly exposed ground between MLWT and MHWT. If the local tidal range is known the area can be deduced from the altitudes marked on the topographical maps. In the Baltic Sea the 'wind wadden' sites (where sediments are exposed by action of wind) which regularly emerge (a number of times per year) are included with this habitat type. Areas of sandbanks which not covered by sea water at low tide are identified as sandflats and distinguished from habitat type 1110 (
sandbanks).
Stands of glassworts (Salicornia spp.) in mudflats are to be assigned to the habitat type
salicornia and other annuals colonizing mud and sand (1310), and stands of cord-grasses to the habitat type
spartina swards (1320).
