Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils (Eu-Molinion)

NATURA 2000 Code: 6410

Planar to montane Molinia meadows on base-rich to calcareous as well as acidic wet or alternately wet/humid sites. These have mostly evolved under extensive management and late mowing regimes (for bedding). Species-poor degenerative stages of drained peatlands are excluded. Molinia meadows are very sensitive to fertilizer applications and to changes in land use (mowing regime). There may be slight similarities to primary Molinia grasslands under special local climatic conditions (impeded cold air flow).

In its assessment meetings the European Commission has clearly pointed out that this habitat type includes Molinion communities not only on calcareous but also on neutral and acidic soils.

Notes on habitat mapping:

The criterion for the delimitation of this habitat type is the presence of vegetation of the syntaxa given above. Species-poor examples with dominant Molinia, especially where these represent degraded raised bogs, are excluded.

Examples adjacent to  calcareous fens (7230) may be regarded as part of the fen complex and recorded as habitat type 7230 (see there). However, this approach should only be taken if it would appear to be favourable to regard the Molinia meadows and the fen as a unit, based on the site structure and the contact habitats present (small-scale local mosaic).
