Draško, Holcer

The Losinj Dolphin Reserve, Croatia
  • Conservation is not just about biology, it takes interdisciplinary work form a fully rounded proposal for an MPA
  • Engaging international, national and local institutions in cross-sectoral negotia-tions and discussions helps expediate MPA designation
  • Collations between various biological and cultural institutions in the development of conservation can help strengthen the case for an MPA
  • Be aware of the social, economic and cultural context within which you are creat-ing your MPA
  • Incorporating the MPA within international and national networks can provide op-portunities for funding and knowledge exchange
  • Make you results understandable to the general public so that their support can be encouraged.
  • An external facilitator can aid negotiations when promoting the development of an MPA
  • Be aware that conservation is inherently political and the process for the devel-opment of an MPA maybe appropriated by politicians for personal gain.
  • Ultimately without local support management of an MPA will not be sustainable over the long-term.
