Pragmatic approaches to cetacean bycatch reduction

• It is unrealistic to try to reduce bycatch to zero.
• No method of bycatch reduction is perfect.
• A single species approach to bycatch reduction may lead to unexpected and addi-tional environmental impacts.
• Imposing mitigation measures unilaterally and without added benefit will under-mine chances of successful mitigation.
• The fishing community must be involved in developing bycatch mitigation ap-proaches.
• A holistic approach to managing fisheries, bycatch, and the fish resource as well as the expectations of industry and NGOs is required.
