Management Units in Baltic harbour porpoises

We analyzed mitochondrial DNA (n=316) and 15 unlinked nuclear microsatel-lites (n=217) in Baltic and North Sea porpoises. Based on the definition that Management Units are defined by significant differences in genotype frequen-cies (=rejection of panmixia), we identify the following units:
- The IDW stock: Inner Danish waters, probably into south Kattegat & East Coast of Sweden
- The Baltic proper stock: Baltic proper (IIId), probably without East Coast of Swe-den
- The East North Sea/Skagerrak stock: East North Sea & Skagerrak, probably into North of Kattegat
We suggest to assign these units as "units to conserve" to which conservation and management efforts should be directed.
