for upcoming bfn conference:

„Marine Nature Conservation in Europe 2006“

8–12 May 2006
Stralsund, German Oceanographic Museum (DMM)

The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation BfN www.bfn.de has the pleasure to announce its upcoming conference entitled Marine Nature Conservation in Europe 2006. This conference will take place in cooperation with and in the premises of the German Oceanographic Museum (DMM) in Stralsund from 8 – 12 May 2006. It will deal specifically with the current status of marine nature conservation policies, conservation science, and the management of human activities in European and adjacent waters. A first conference of this kind, but concentrating on German marine nature conservation issues, took place in the German Oceanographic Museum in 2004 and was a great success.

The conference is financed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. It will be conducted in English. There will be three days of invited presentations dedicated to (I) marine nature conservation policies, (II) conservation science, and (III) the management of human activities, respectively, followed by a day of different excursions in the surroundings. This conference covers a wide range of actual and current topics in marine nature conservation involving a full range of interested participants such as policy makers, conservation managers, scientists and non-governmental organisations. Speakers are mainly from across Europe, as well as some from outside of Europe. The number of participants is limited to 250 persons.

The German Oceanographic Museum is located in the picturesque centre of Stralsund, a medieval Hanseatic and world heritage city on the Baltic coast. It is situated in north-eastern Germany, in the middle of Europe, some 300 km north of Berlin and east of Hamburg (approx. 3 hours train ride). Frequent trains connect these cities with Stralsund. There are also major ferry connections to Rostock and to Sassnitz/Mukran (Rügen), if you are travelling from Trelleborg (Sweden), Gedser (Denmark), Klaipeda (Lithuania) or St. Petersburg (Russia).

A detailed programme is attached as download (Programme.pdf). Please feel free to contact Stefan Bräger Stefan.Braeger@bfn-vilm.de for more Information.

For your convenience, we have been able to negotiate special conditions for accommodation in one of the best hotels in Stralsund. The “STEIGENBERGER HOTEL BALTIC“ will offer you comfortable single rooms including breakfast for €60 and double rooms for €80, if you book directly (using the attached form) before 01 April. After 31 March they will charge their usual rates. For other hotel accommodation please visit the website of the city of Stralsund www.stralsund.de .

Please return the completed registration form for the conference to Stefan.Braeger@bfn-vilm.de as soon as possible, at latest by 31 March, as the above mentioned restricted capacities for no more than 250 participants and spaces are filling up fast.
