Offshore marine protected areas for harbour porpoise in Germany
  • Harbour porpoises are a feature which according to the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) solely or in combination with other features can qualify a marine area to be identified and selected as a Natura 2000 site.
  • In German offshore waters a number of sites were established to protect harbour porpoises under the Habitats Directive.
  • Adequate management of these sites would mean addressing adverse human impacts on harbour porpoises and other cetaceans, for example by-catch, underwater noise, reduction of prey organisms, disturbance, deterioration of feeding grounds.
