Robert, Philippe

The Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean Sea

The following points should need to be clear at the beginning and for the usual functioning of a protected area.

  • Define clearly the goals and the stakes, threw a good biological, legal, social and economical analysis, with all the institutional, associative, professional stakeholders to realise a managing plan. This one should include concrete and visual measures in the technical, pedagogical and legal fields.
  • The role of the scientists is very important and permanent but the managers should stay in the first line for all the proposals.
  • Working groups by e-mail should be used, but meetings seem to be needed, regularly, to really keep in touch. The powerful of a personal and positive rela-tionship between the stakeholders and managers is quite evident. It very often helps to top over institutional problems.
  • The actions should be assessed with all the actors involved, who must see the possibilities to move and to improve what is needed (Charta with an official frame may be an efficient way). The partners must know those possibilities of evolu-tion if necessary, for instance threw the next managing plan (each 5 years). Mov-ing step by step, all together.
