In November 2009 in Stralsund, Germany, the international conference on “Progress in Marine Conservation in Europe 2009” provided a forum for in depth discussions on continuously important and emerging marine nature conservation issues in Europe. Participants and speakers took part during the conference week representing a wide range of international conventions and agreements, policy makers, conservation managers, renewed scientists and inter- and nongovernmental organizations. The following proceedings summarise as many of the high quality speeches held at the conference which paid tribute to progress already made in marine nature conservation and identify emerging promising approaches to proceed in marine nature conservation in Europe and beyond.
