Nature conservation worldwide has been guided by a series of conservation targets, notably the Aichi Targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Aichi targets are critical to achieve, but they are interim, politically-agreed targets meant to be completed by the year 2020. The workshop was convened to consider targets that are beyond Aichi and are based on a scientific understanding of the requirements for truly sustainable nature conservation.

This first meeting in July 2017 laid out the process of how to involve expertise and engage with key stakeholders. The resulting recommendations will be brought into the discussions within the CBD. The Conference of Parties of the CBD will agree in 2020 on new global conservation targets for the period beyond 2020.
