Vilm in the course of the year

Indian summer, grey fall – the storm season is starting

The air is getting colder and storms become more frequent: Fall is about to start, the trees dress up in beautiful fall colors, many fruits are around and Thanks Giving is being celebrated. People and nature are preparing for winter season.

On warm and sunny days the newly hatched European Grass Snakes show up and can be niecly observed in the harbor area trying to sunbathe on the warm concrete. Whereas the adult snakes are well on their way or already in their hibernating shelters, the young and only about 5 inches long snakes try to catch their first meal (many actually will start hibernation without foraging).

The trees on the island have changed color and clearly mark the end of summer and the start of fall. Sun light can again penetrate through the disapearing leaf canopy and it is actually getting lighter again within the decidous forest. Some unreasonable Wood Anemones even start to bloom again at the beginning of the dark fall and winter season.
