Invited experts on geoheritage and reated biodiversity

After the 1st International Conference on Geoheritage 2015 in China the 1st International Workshop on Global Geoheritage will take place in Germany in 2018. This workshop is co-organised by the IUCN-WCPA Geoheritage Specialist Group and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation which will also provide financial support. The workshop will take place at the International Academy for Nature Conservation Isle of Vilm in the Baltic Sea in Germany.
It will include thematic presentations for selected invited participants followed by discussion for the topics listed below. However, participants are welcome to make poster presentations on any topics related to geoheritage and its biodiversity.

The Role of GSG in IUCN/WCPA;Exploring the links between geodiversity and biodiversity: Geodiversity forms the physical foundation for ecosystems and biodiversity, providing habitat creation, habitat maintenance and landscape heterogeneity. This theme will show how geodiversity is intimately linked with and underpins biodiversity. It will identify research needs and conservation gaps.
Conservation of Caves and Karst: Karst landforms with caves are one of the most significant landforms in the world. Caves include special cave organisms which have adapted to the dark environment over the geological time scale and persist in a special ecosystem. This theme will deal with geoheritage and biodiversity values in the world as well as revitalizing the Cave and Karst Working Group in WCPA.
Geoheritage and International Programmes and Conventions - Recognition of Outstanding Universal Values, International Significance and Key Geoheritage Sites: In 2015, UNESCO Global Geopark Programme was established. Geoheritage evaluation has become one of the urgent topics for discussion. This theme will deal with the future revision directions of WH criterion (viii), International Geoheritage Significance for Global Geoparks and the Key Geoheritage Sites programme which is a new programme suggested by the GSG. Additionally, some thematic studies on various specialized topics for WH sites and Global Geoparks will be discussed.

A pre-workshop as well as a post-workshop excursion are being planned for which a separate registration is needed.
