2016: Workshop "Peatland Conservation and Wise Use in the Context of Climate Change – A Contribution to the Implementation of the Ramsar Convention"

Against the background of the implementation of results of the latest Conference of the Parties (COP 12, 2015 in Uruguay) of the Ramsar Convention and in order to provide a contribution to the implementation of the adopted Resolution XII.11 on “peatlands, climate change and wise use”, this workshop took place from 11th to 14th of September 2016 at the International Academy for Nature Conservation, Isle of Vilm (Germany). The workshop was jointly organized by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, the Danish Nature Agency and the Greifswald Mire Centre (GMC).

International participants from science, politicy, civil society and the private worked on guidelines for the designation of peatlands as wetlands of international relevance (Ramsar sites), discussed best practice examples for the restoration and rewetting of peatlands for a Technical Report of the Ramsar Convention and identified contributions to the  new “Global Peatland Initiative”. Additionally alternatives to peat extraction, e.g. the “cultivation” and utilization of peat moss, were discussed and possible policy approaches were debated.

The organizers also specifically aimed to support the exchange and networking of science, policy, civil society and the private sectorand to foster the identification of knowledge gaps, the development of guidelines and based on experiences across countries and continents.
