Profile: Wetlands International

Wetlands International
founded in 1995

34 national governments and 11 non-governmental organisations.

Wetlands International supports the conservation of wetlands and waterbirds. It also works in an advisory capacity for the Ramsar Convention.

Wetlands International supports governments at national level and the public at local level in the conservation and renaturalisation of wetlands. The organisation seeks to be involved in and influence relevant policy decisions, conventions and agreements. It also promotes local public awareness and acceptance of wetlands by highlighting their importance in networks of flyways for migratory birds and in water management. So that it can supply well-founded information, Wetlands International monitors wetlands, migratory birds and waterbirds. It is supported in this work by 15,000 volunteers. Wetlands International organises global and national conservation programmes and carries out projects on its own initiative, among other things demonstrating best practices in the conservation and management of wetlands.

Wetlands International has a staff of around 150 people, working in 16 offices all over the world. The organisation also has a network of specialist groups, each working on a specific topic and advising the organisation

The supreme decision-making body in Wetlands International is the Association of Members. This consists of Counsellors of Honour, representatives from partner organisations, delegates of member governments and organisations, specialist group coordinators and the Board of Directors. The Association of Members convenes every three years to agree the organisation’s global strategy, review the work plan, agree the budget and appoint the Board of Directors.

Wetlands International is funded by membership fees paid by member states and international organisations, foundation contributions and donations.
