Parts of the German North Sea and Baltic Sea Exclusive Economic Zone (the German 12-to-200 mile zone) were designated as special protection areas in 2005 to protect sea and water birds wintering and moulting offshore. These two areas, the Eastern German Bight and the Pomeranian Bay, are part of the Natura 2000 network of European protected areas. With some 5,000 square kilometres, they are among Europe’s largest bird sanctuaries.

Intended to aid development of management plans for the two areas, this book presents the scientific background on the ecology of bird species protected under European law. The information is based on a compilation of new and existing data on the biological characteristics of the 27 species important to the areas. A compilation of this kind was previously lacking and is needed in order to develop specific conservation measures for each species. The vulnerability of each species to human activities in the marine environment is determined from analysis of their morphology, behavioural biology and nutritional ecology.

Profiles of Seabirds and Waterbirds of the German North and Baltic Seas clearly and comprehensibly presents the current state of knowledge, providing a key resource for the development of conservation measures and assessment of human activities in marine bird habitats.
