Conference of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol

According to Article 26, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity shall serve as the meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol (COP-MOP).

COP-MOP-2 took place in Cancun, Mexico from 4 to 17 October 2016. The agenda of COP-MOP-2 included inter alia the following topics: The Access and Benefit-sharing Clearing-House and information-sharing (Article 14 of the Nagoya Protocol); the report of the Compliance Committee (Article 30); the financial mechanism and financial resources (Article 25); cooperation with other international organizations, conventions and initiatives; measures to assist in capacity-building and capacity development (Article 22) as well as awareness raising (Article 21); the need for and modalities of a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism (Article 10), as well as the assessment and review of the effectiveness of the Protocol (Article 31).

COP-MOP-1 took place in Pyeongchang, South Korea from 13 to 17 October 2014, where far-reaching decisions for the further development and implementation of the Protocol were taken. In particular, the modalities of operation of the Access and Benefit-sharing Clearing-House were adopted. Further important decisions related to the rules of procedure of COP-MOP, cooperative procedures and institutional mechanisms to promote compliance with the provisions of the Protocol, monitoring and reporting (Article 29), capacity-building measures and the further process towards a potential global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism (Article 10).
