Training materials on ‘other effective area-based conservation measures’

Other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) are areas outside protected areas that deliver the long-term in situ conservation of biodiversity and therefore contribute to achieving internationally agreed conservation goals under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). However, they are often overlooked and not reported. In 2018, the Parties to the CBD agreed on guiding principles and criteria for the identification of such areas. This has elevated the international importance of OECMs. State agencies, private entities, Indigenous Peoples and local communities are now invited to identify, recognise, support and report OECMs in ways that complement systems of protected areas.

To support awareness raising and capacity building on OECMs, BfN’s International Academy for Nature Conservation and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas have developed a set of training materials. The materials are intended to develop worldwide capacity for identifying, recognising, supporting and reporting OECMs. After the training participants will, among other things, understand the background and justification of OECMs and be able to contribute to timely and comprehensive reporting to the World Database on OECMs and other relevant databases.

The training materials are designed to be used for face-to-face or online training led by an instructor. The training material includes instructions, learning plans, detailed training notes, presentations and films as well as some background literature. All materials can be adapted to target groups, geographical context and training needs. Some materials are also open for self-paced distant learning.

Materials for self-paced distant learning

With four videos (in progress) and two self-animated presentations, self-paced distant learners gain an overview of OECMs, learn how OECMs are reported to the World Database on OECM and get to know about different types of candidate OECMs in South Africa.

For Trainers

These training materials are globally applicable and will support people running capacity building programmes at the local, national and international level as well as educators in conservation leadership courses, M.Sc. or M.Phil. programmes in conservation, protected and conserved areas, or dedicated training programmes, etc.
