Activities/Thematic Focus

  • 1. Development and implementation of strategies for federal-level nature conservation species, habitat and landscape monitoring – including in the international context and in cooperation with the Länder (see Section 6 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSChG))
  • 2. Compiling data from monitoring programmes operated by the Länder and conservation organisations; coordinating, supporting and further developing national bird monitoring in collaboration with the Federation of German Avifaunists (DDA). Coordinating and planning national monitoring in accordance with the Birds Directive. Coordinating body in accordance with Section 2 (1) of the Federal-Länder administrative agreement on bird monitoring > Bird monitoring
  • 3. Coordinating, supporting and further developing the national surveillance of Habitats Directive habitat types and species (under Article 11) and incorporation of the data into the national report and analyses for Germany – in close collaboration with the Länder and other EU Member States. > Habitats Directive monitoring
  • 4. Development and implementation of strategies for monitoring the impacts of genetically modified organisms on biodiversity and ecosystems – with the Länder and at EU level. > GMO monitoring
  • 5. Assistance in enforcement activities under the Genetic Engineering Act (GenTG): Assessing and formulating opinions on monitoring plans and reports submitted by applicants and operators in relation to the release and placing on the market of genetically modified organisms.
  • 6. Designing and coordinating data collection on the high-nature-value (HNV) farmland indicator in close collaboration with the Länder and other EU Member States. > HNV farmland indicator
  • 7. Design, development and implementation of nationwide ecosystem monitoring – sample-based observation of the condition of and changes in ecosystems throughout the country – in cooperation with the Länder.
  • 8. Analysing data and presenting findings from national monitoring programmes (including bird monitoring, Habitats Directive monitoring, Bird Directive report monitoring and HNV farmland monitoring)
  • 9. Compilation and assessment of nature conservation indicators at national level, including biodiversity indicators under the Federal Government’s National Strategy on Biological Diversity and Sustainability Strategy; reconciliation with Länder indicators and international indicator systems. > Indicators
