Tasks of International Nature Conservation: Multilateral Cooperation

  • Conceptual development of the international activities of the BfN
  • Further development, coordination and implementation of the BfN’s EU/Europe strategy
  • General, fundamental and project-related questions of multilateral cooperation and on biodiversity and climate change, including the coordination within the BfN General and fundamental questions on the implementation and further development of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); development of concepts and recommendations for action; SBSTTA – Focal Point of the CBD
  • Cooperation with international conventions, programmes and organisations, in particular UNESCO World Heritage, Ramsar Convention, Alpine Convention, IUCN and questions related to  the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 
  • Secretariat and management of the German MAB National Committee as well as cooperation with the international MAB programme
  • Representation of the BfN in the European and multilateral international cooperation with federal authorities, countries, international organisations, research institutions, national and international civil society organisations (unless other organisational units of the institution are responsible)
  • Implementation of multilateral projects for international nature conservation 
  • Coordination of the trilateral cooperation D-A-C-H (with the Federal Environment Agency Austria and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment)

Tasks of international nature conservation: Bilateral cooperation

  • General, fundamental and project-related questions of bilateral cooperation, including the coordination within the BfN 
  • Implementation of bilateral projects for international nature conservation 
  • Representation of the BfN in bilateral international cooperation with federal authorities, countries, international organisations, research institutions, national and international civil society organisations (unless other organisational units of the BfN are responsible)
  • Coordination of the budget titles “International Cooperation” and “Advisory Assistance”
