Climate Change and Biodiversity
Biodiversity conservation - climate protection
Biodiversity and climate are closely related and impact each other. The current and future climate change represents one of the biggest threats for the diversity of life on earth. At the same time it is presumed to be one of the biggest challenges of conservation in the coming years.
To an increasing degree climate change not only threatens biodiversity but also the human society and their natural resources. Through the protection, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems, effective conservation can contribute to mitigate climate change and protect the population against the impacts of extreme events and natural disasters. These so-called ecosystem-based approaches use ecosystem services such as the carbon sequestration capacity of ecosystems. They are aimed at synergies between conservation, mitigation and adaptation and often turn out to be more cost-efficient than technical solutions.

Study on “Nature-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban areas“ now available

The study comprises latest scientific findings on selected aspects of the topic (literature review). In addition, results of a European Expert Workshop in preparation of the European BfN/ENCA conference on "Nature-based solutions to climate change in urban areas and their rural surroundings" are presented.
