Profile: ECNC

European Centre for Nature Conservation (ECNC)
founded in 1993

ECNC is a network of 52 governmental and non-governmental nature conservation organisations and institutes in 28 European countries.

ECNC aims to promote and appraise European nature conservation policy at EU level, with particular regard to conserving biodiversity. A key goal is to promote cooperation between science, government and business.

ECNC provides its expertise to national and regional governments, intergovernmental organisations such as the United Nations, the European Commission, the European Environment Agency and the Council of Europe, and to institutions working in financing, land use and research.

ECNC projects are clustered in five thematic programmes:

  • Nature and society
  • Business and biodiversity
  • European ecological networks
  • State of European nature and biodiversity
  • International policy support.

The ECNC consists of four bodies:

  • The ECNC Board, which is the highest decision-making organ of ECNC.
  • The Scientific Council, a ‘think-tank’ and advisory body looking after the scientific quality of all activities of the foundation. The Scientific Council advises the Board and the Secretariat on all matters involving ECNC’s mission and work.
  • The Secretariat, which is the coordinating body of ECNC. It assists the Board, Scientific Council and Network, providing project coordination, communication and information services, and logistical support.
  • The Network, consisting of organisations and institutes from countries all over Europe. Membership of the ECNC Network is open to research institutions, public agencies and organisations of any kind active in the areas of nature, biodiversity and sustainable development.
