Profile: EUCC

Coastal and Marine Union (European Union for Coastal Conservation, EUCC)
founded in 1989

EUCC is an association with more than 2700 members and among them 600 member organisations in 40 European countries.

EUCC’s mission is to promote coastal and marine sustainable development and integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) through information provision and dissemination, advice, education and training, events and pilot projects. EUCC also aims to bridge the gap between scientists, conservationists and environmentalists, site managers, planners and policymakers.

The EUCC Council, the main policymaking body, consists of 14 representatives of national branches and meets once a year. The Council elects the Executive Committee and appoints the International Secretariat and the Advisory Board. The Executive Committee oversees the operation of the EUCC between meetings of Council. The International Secretariat consists of the executive management and staff of regional offices in Spain (Centro Mediterraneo EUCC) and Lithuania (Baltic Office). The national units are the basic units of EUCC and aim to promote the exchange of information on integrated coastal zone management (ICZM).

EUCC’s activities cover Europe and neighbouring regions, including the Caspian Sea, Black Sea and Mediterranean coastal zones. EUCC stages congresses and workshops, performs monitoring, supports model projects, and advises on and carries out public relations work. A second area of focus alongside promoting ICZM is climate change and its implications for coasts. EUCC also promotes and supports various initiatives to foster the exchange of information between experts at various levels and the public (see below for websites). EUCC is directly involved in formulating European strategies and legislation on coastal policy following sustainable development principles.

EUCC is funded out of membership dues.
