Chart description: Background noise measurements in the Baltic Sea

The chart shows the findings of the background noise measurements taken in the Baltic Sea. The x-axis shows the frequency level in Herz, while the y-axis shows the noise pressure level in decibels [dB] re 1 µPa. The curves show the measurements taken at stations at six Natura 2000 sites in the Baltic Sea and for comparison purposes, the background noise from wave movement at wind forces 2 and 6, from average shipping traffic and the auditory threshold of harbour porpoises. The background noise measurements taken in the protected areas in the Baltic Sea indicated a reduction in noise levels in the following areas: Fehmarn Belt – Western Rønne Bank – Kadet Trench – Pommernbank and Adler Ground – Odra Bank.
