Born in Ostercappeln, Lower Saxony, in 1962, Sabine Riewenherm later studied biology at the University of Osnabrück from 1985 to 1991. During her studies she organised various events, including the “Ecology and Nature Conservation in Agricultural Areas” conference, and was the publishing editor of the Society for Ecology’s corresponding conference proceedings.

After her studies, Sabine Riewenherm focused on science journalism and policy consultancy in the fields of biotechnology and bioethics – among other things as the responsible editor of the specialist journal “Genethischer Informationsdienst”, as a book author and from 2003 to 2011 as a scientific parliamentary group advisor in the Bundestag parliamentary faction Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. During that time, as a specialist consultant at the interface between science, politics and the public, she accompanied numerous legislative procedures in the fields of biotechnology and bioethics.

In 2011, she joined the Rhineland-Palatinate civil service. There she held various positions in the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Environment: as Head of Division for the coordination of federal affairs at the Rhineland-Palatinate State Representation in Berlin, as a member of the supervisory board of the state-owned research institute AgroScience in Mainz, as a consultant for the Agriculture and Environment Committee in the German Bundesrat, as Head of the Minister’s Office and as coordinator for the affairs of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.

Sabine Riewenherm was appointed President of the State Office for the Environment in Rhineland-Palatinate on 1 April 2020. At the suggestion of Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze, she was appointed President of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) on 1 September 2021.
