Waves and turbulence are fundamental phenomena in the ocean that influence a wide range of motions from the Kolmogorov to planetary scales. They determine how energy is transported across scales, exchanged between different forms of energy and ultimately dissipated. The interaction of waves and turbulence also has important implications for the transport of energy, solutes and particles in physical space.
This workshop aims to bring together the latest knowledge on waves and turbulence in geophysical flows, especially in the ocean, and to answer open questions in this field. Our topics include:
  • The role of surface waves in the ocean, their influence on the turbulence and mixing of the ocean surface layers and their impact on atmosphere-ocean exchange;
  • The role of internal waves, their generation and propagation in the ocean, their interactions with other waves, mesoscale and submesoscale motions and with topography;
  • Flow instability, transition to turbulence, dissipation;
  • The role and effect of Rossby waves and their interactions with internal waves
  • Tidal waves are the main source of energy in estuaries and shelf seas and contribute significantly to internal wave generation at all ocean scales.
