Putbus/Isle of Vilm, 20 September 2020: From 15 to 18 September, the IUCN's Global Protected Areas Programme (GPAP) in cooperation with the International Academy for Nature Conservation Isle of Vilm (INA) of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) invited to a virtual workshop on the further development of the IUCN Green List. Protected areas appear on the Green List if they meet the high standards of the Green List for effectively managed protected areas following an independent assessment by accredited experts according to defined criteria. The IUCN Green List of Protected Areas is the first global standard for independent assessment of protected areas. It is jointly managed by the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the IUCN Global Programme of Protected Areas.

Around 120 experts from all over the world have joined the various virtual working groups to work out recommendations for further development and worldwide dissemination. At the end of the workshop, 13 new Green Listed Sites were approved. The list now contains 59 sites in various countries.

The INA and IUCN have been working together intensively for several years under a partnership agreement. "We are more than happy to be able to work synergistically with IUCN to promote high standards and new concepts in protected areas governance and management and to reach out widely. The Academy has a strong focus on capacity development in its work. Her activities in this regard help strongly to promote new tools and encourage their application. The Academy is currently involved in developing trainings on Privately Protected Areas" said Cornelia Paulsch, head of the staff unit "International Academy for Nature Conservation, Administration of Vilm".
