Vilm
Last week, the island of Vilm hosted experts from governments, nongovernmental organizations, research institutions, development banks, and implementing organizations from more than 12 countries for the seminar “Biodiversity & Development: Delivering Nature-Positive Development Pathways.”

Participants in the seminar: ‘Biodiversity and Development: Pathways to Nature-Positive Development’.

The event focused on how biodiversity conservation and sustainable development can be more closely integrated and what political, financial, and practical approaches are needed to successfully implement nature-positive development pathways. Participants discussed current challenges, shared experiences from their respective countries and institutions, and jointly developed perspectives for more effectively integrating biodiversity goals into development and transformation processes.

A field trip to Jasmund National Park brought the discussions to life in one of Germany’s most remarkable coastal landscapes—right on our doorstep. The impressive chalk cliffs, the ancient beech forests, and the diverse conservation and management approaches in place there vividly demonstrated how nature conservation, scientific findings, and societal interests can be reconciled.

This is precisely why the International Academy for Nature Conservation (INA) was founded: to bring together people from different countries, disciplines, and institutions to exchange knowledge, learn from one another, and develop joint solutions to global challenges—in a place that is itself shaped by nature. For decades, the island of Vilm has provided a unique setting for this, where professional dialogue, international networking, and collaborative learning can be experienced firsthand.
We thank all participants, speakers, and partner organizations for the inspiring exchange and look forward to continuing the connections made and ideas developed this week beyond the seminar.
