Alkaline fens
Alkaline fens of the Caricion davallianae with mostly low-growing sedge and rush communities and helophilous mosses (Caricetalia davallianae). These include Carex davalliana fens (Caricetum davallianae) and Schoenus fens (Primulo-Schoenetum ferruginei, Orchido-Schoenetum) as well as stands of Alpine rush (Juncus alpinus) and of Blunt-flowered rush (Juncus subnodulosus).
Base-rich, non-calcareous sites with percolating water, e.g. with vegetation of the Caricetum frigidae, are included.
Notes on habitat mapping
The precondition for assignment to this habitat type is the presence of a fen core characterized by vegetation of the syntaxa given above. Small-scale mosaics with Molinia meadows can be integrated. For the purposes of notifying the site for Natura 2000, where the fen core is quite clearly delineated, adjacent habitats should be included at least insofar as they are connected to the actual core in terms of landform and hydrology. Examples of the Caricion davallianae in dune slacks are to be assigned to habitat type 2190, peat formations in humid dune slacks. Hollows with stonewort swards in fen complexes are included.
