The criterion for the delimitation of this habitat type is the dominance of Salix arenaria on grey dunes. Individual plants of Salix arenaria are not to be recorded. It differs from coastal dunes with Hippophaë rhamnoides (2160) in its dominance of Salix arenaria. Dominant stands of Salix arenaria in humid dune slacks are included.
