Medio-European subalpine beech woods with Acer and Rumex arifolius

Deciduous woodlands with beech and sycamore in the tree layer (Aceri-Fagetum) and with tall herbaceous undergrowth, of the upper montane to sub-alpine zone. The herbaceous layer is species-rich, with clear tendencies towards the Betulo-Adenostyletea. At the timberline the trees often are low-growing and deformed, and covered in epiphytic mosses and lichens.

Notes on habitat mapping

The criterion for the delimitation of this habitat type is the presence of sub-alpine tall herbaceous plants (Betulo-Adenostyletea) in woodlands dominated by Fagus sylvatica and Acer pseudoplatanus. Lower altitude woodlands of slopes and ravines which are rich in sycamore should be considered under Tilio-Acerion forests of slopes, screes and ravines (9180).
