Wooded dunes of the Atlantic, Continental and Boreal region
Natural or semi-natural forests on coastal dunes of the Atlantic, Continental and Boreal region. These can be oak forests on acid soils or oak-birch-beech forests (Quercion robori-petraeae), on southern Atlantic coasts also thermophilous oak forests (Quercetalia pubescenti-petraeae) or pine-rich mixed forests. Locally humid dune heathlands or dune slack vegetation can develop into humid mixed deciduous forest and into carr woodlands. Along the Baltic coast there are occasional beech forests on acid soils (eroding shores) and towards the east an increasing number of pine-rich forests occur.
Notes on habitat mapping
The criterion for the delimitation of this habitat type is the presence of near-natural deciduous (North Sea and Baltic) or mixed deciduous woodland (Baltic) on coastal dunes. Pine forests without a near-natural understory (e.g. for resin production) are excluded.
Stands in humid dune slacks or on sandy sites in between the coastal dunes are included.
