In order to share experiences and discuss approaches for the implementation of PES as instruments for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection, a workshop titled "Payments for Ecosystem Service – Towards an Implementation Strategy", was organised by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), together with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the Institute for Environmental Economics and World Trade (IUW) at the University of Hannover and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ).

Description
More specifically, workshop participants discussed issues related to a) institutional aspects of PES, including the importance of a supportive legal environment, the impact of PES on human behaviour, b) efficiency versus equity trade-offs where schemes pursue dual environmental and social objectives, including their impact on livelihoods and poverty reduction and c) various integrated policy planning, governance and implementation issues that are key to the success of PES.
This report summarises the presentations, discussions and recommendations of the participants.
