Decision V/6 “Ecosystem Approach” by the fifth Conference of the Parties (COP-5) of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD) encourages contracting parties to further conceptual elaboration and practical
verification of the Ecosystem Approach. COP-6 requested in its Decision VI/12 the Executive Secretary
of the CBD to develop proposals for the refinement of the principles and operational guidance
of the Ecosystem Approach on the basis of case-studies and lessons learnt.
