The Nature Awareness Study is a series of surveys dealing with the public awareness of nature and biodiversity in Germany. Each study presents new topics of relevance for nature conservation policy and environmental communication, besides monitoring changes in awareness between studies via a steady set of questions. The current study focuses on crises related to nature: the ecosystem crisis and the loss of biological diversity, the climate crisis and the corona pandemic.

The 2021 Nature Awarenes Study is the 7th regular publication of the respective study series, conducted by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in a two years cycle since 2009. It serves as a monitoring instrument for public awareness according to national and international agreements on nature conservation and biodiversity protection. Obtained results are of high relevance for nature conservation policy, general and target group-specific communication as well as environmental education.
