The twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change are of great concern to young people. To provide them with a space for exchange, networking, and engagement, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) invited them to the third “Biodiversity for Future” youth dialogue platform at the International Academy for Nature Conservation on the island of Vilm from September 28 to October 2.
The young people discuss the most pressing issues relating to biodiversity and nature conservation.

Around 35 young people aged 18 to 27 with an interest in nature conservation gathered on Vilm to gain insights into current nature conservation topics, such as the National Strategy on Biological Diversity 2030 and the EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL). The thematic focus was on marine nature conservation, the importance of peatland restoration for natural climate protection, and the role of young people in nature conservation.

During the event, participants had the opportunity to learn about current political, scientific, and social processes and projects in nature conservation, discuss opportunities for participation and implementation progress with other young people, and engage in joint discussions on the most pressing issues related to these topics. An excursion to the nearby island of Rügen rounded off the program.

During the event, it became clear that young people, as an important part of society, should be more involved in nature conservation matters. As long-term support measures for practical, association-, and project-related nature conservation work, participants expressed a wish for more networking and participation opportunities for young conservationists.
