Vilm, 10/08/2019. Experts from diverse countries working for the German development cooperation came together in August 2019 for an intense workshop on ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change (EbA). The seminar addressed the fast growing interest and demand for such projects.

Ecosystem-based adaptation refers to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural ecosystems in the frame of an overall adaptation strategy in order to protect people from the consequences of climate change. Intact and healthy ecosystems provide a multitude of ecosystem services on which human well-being directly depends. EbA helps to protect these services, and thus combines nature conservation with climate change adaptation.

The participants learned about the opportunities offered by EbA, how the approach can be mainstreamed into political processes and how EbA projects can be financed. Because ecosystem-based adaptation addresses many different sectors, participants also worked on forms of communication to successfully show other stakeholders the opportunities it offers.

The training is part of an established cooperation between the International Academy for Nature Conservation, the Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GiZ) and the German Development Bank (KfW). It takes place annually and focuses on contemporary topics regarding nature conservation and development cooperation. (Photo: Gisela Stolpe, BfN)
