The proceedings provide a comprehensive compilation of the results of a one year study on governance of protected areas in Eastern Europe including the outcomes of a final expert workshop from 2 - 5 December 2012 at the International Academy for Nature Conservation on Isle of Vilm, Germany. The study was commissioned to ProPark, Romania, by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation.

The objectives of the study were:
- to promote the understanding and recognition of the concepts of the different protected areas governance types by illustration with case studies
- to promote the use of all types of governance where applicable, also by providing context on why certain types were applied and by providing lessons learned for each case study
- to document the range of governance models used in Eastern Europe
- to highlight some issues, trends, opportunities and concerns specific to the governance of protected areas in Eastern Europe
- to draw out implications for ongoing policy and practice of protected area governance in Eastern Europe
